Another UK independent school has told parents it is consulting on possible closure due to falling pupil numbers .

It is understood that parents, carers, and staff were told of the proposed closure of on Monday.

, which runs the school, said that the school could close at the end of the academic year.

The co-educational school, housed in a large Victorian mansion, was established in 1959. It has 120 pupils aged three to 11, with capacity for 158, say.

A spokesperson for Cognita told 黑料福利网: “We are entering a period of consultation with impacted staff regarding this proposal. During this consultation period, as well as supporting our colleagues, our focus will remain on the children and making sure that their education continues as normal.鈥

鈥淚t is with great sadness that we have communicated to parents and staff that we are proposing to close Oxford House School in Colchester at the end of the summer term 2025.

The announcement makes Oxford House School the sixth UK independent school so far this year to say it is consulting on closure.

Most cited VAT on school fees 鈥 which came into effect on January 1 鈥 as a factor in the decision.

Most recently, another schools group 鈥 Chatsworth Schools 鈥 announced it was consulting on the closure of and , North London.

Cognita has not publically blamed VAT as a reason for the planned closure of Oxford House. However, reported last June before the VAT increase was confirmed that schools in the group were warning parents that fees may have to rise twice in 2024-25.
