Stamford School has announced it will offer a Level 3 BTEC in engineering starting in September 2026.

The qualification, equivalent to one A-level, provides practical preparation for degrees and apprenticeships in areas such as mechanical, electrical and manufacturing engineering.

The new BTEC follows the school鈥檚 announcement that it would launch a similar level qualification in agriculture 鈥 worth three A-levels 鈥 this September.

A statement from Stamford School today said that the Midlands was famed for its engineering firms and it aimed 鈥渢o equip students with the skills and experience to join this dynamic regional industry and contribute to its future success.鈥

Moira Cox, deputy head academic at Stamford School, said: 鈥淎 significant proportion of our sixth form students already leave us to pursue careers in the engineering sector.

鈥淭his new course is excellent preparation for students either going onto university to study engineering, or choosing a more vocational route such as degree apprenticeships, particularly when combined with A-levels in subjects such as mathematics and physics.鈥

Steve Newton, head of design technology engineering added: 鈥淭his new programme is more than just a qualification 鈥 it’ll enable you to think like an engineer:  designing, creating, and delivering real projects. It鈥檚 your launchpad into the engineering world鈥︹

The news comes as many independent schools are looking to diversify their sixth form offer beyond A-levels as vocational options look increasingly appealing in an era of artificial intelligence and burdensome university tuition fees.
